The Royal Award of Islamic Finance has today released the Royal Award Winner Commemorative Booklet, which features Iqbal Khan, the 2012 Royal Award recipient. Iqbal Khan was instrumental in the establishment of several Islamic finance institutions including Citi Islamic Investment Bank, the Islamic Finance Project at Harvard University, Meezan Bank, HSBC Amanah, and most recently, Fajr Capital.
The Commemorative Booklets are part of five-issue publication series featuring all the Award recipients. Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz, former Governor of Bank Negara Malaysia and the 2018 Royal Award recipient was featured in the first booklet in the series, released in January 2021. Professor Datuk Rifaat Ahmed Abdel Karim, CEO of the Capital Market Authority of Sudan (2016 Royal Award recipient) and Dato’ Dr Halim, founding member of Malaysia’s first Islamic bank (2014 Royal Award recipient) were also featured in this series.
The fourth Commemorative Booklet on Iqbal Khan highlights his background, achievements and global contribution to the Islamic finance industry. He has played a pivotal and decisive role in facilitating, promoting and innovating Islamic finance on a global scale. His passion for ethical community-based financial services has sparked increased interest in Islamic finance among international financial institutions, regulators and academia. Through his leadership and dedication, Iqbal Khan motivated the push for global sovereign sukuk. He also led the Shariah thought process towards a greater understanding of the concept of foreign currency global sukuk. Most notably, in 2002, he originated the concept of the global Ijarah-based sovereign sukuk, a significant step forward in the development of the Islamic finance industry. He is also the recipient of numerous international honours.
The latest Commemorative Booklet also features a collection of speeches at the 2012 gala dinner and award ceremony delivered by Tan Sri Ranjit Ajit Singh, the former Chairman of the Securities Commission Malaysia and Tun Musa Hitam, the Chair of Jury.
