Global Takaful Group
GTG was formed with the objective of enhancing mutual co-operation among takaful and re-takaful operators in the world.
The origin of Global Takaful Group (GTG) can be traced back to 1995. An informal grouping of six takaful (Islamic insurance) operators was formed under the name of ASEAN Takaful Group which membership was focused on companies operating in the South East Asian region. In 2003, the name was changed to Asian Takaful Group to reflect membership across a larger geographical area.
To accommodate worldwide membership, it was renamed Global Takaful Group and was incorporated as a company limited by guarantee on 15 February 2007 in the tax-heaven of Labuan, Malaysia. Twenty companies became its founding members.
In essence, GTG was formed with the objective of enhancing mutual cooperation among takaful and re-takaful operators worldwide. GTG has undertaken various capacitybuilding initiatives to enhance the role and importance of takaful and re-takaful as components of the entire Islamic finance ecosystem.
GTG choose Malaysia as the secretarial centre due to the high concentration of takaful and re-takaful players and the enabling regulatory and business enviroment.
