INCEIF and OpenLearning Enhance Human Capital in Islamic Finance through Massive Open Online Course
  • INCEIF and OpenLearning launch Introduction to Islamic Finance 1 MOOC on www.openlearning.com.
  • The MOOC is free and open to finance professionals and students as well as members of the public in Malaysia and worldwide.
  • INCEIF was established by Bank Negara and is the first financial institution in Malaysia to adopt the OpenLearning MOOC platform.


KUALA LUMPUR, 27 May 2016 – INCEIF, the Global University of Islamic Finance and OpenLearning today announced the availability of the Introduction to Islamic Finance 1 Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) for finance professionals, students and members of the public in Malaysia and beyond.

The Introduction to Islamic Finance 1 MOOC aims to develop human capital for the Malaysian and global Islamic finance industry. The course provides a foundation in Shari'ah principles that enables learners to comprehend the different aspects of Islamic finance. The MOOC covers key terms and aspects in Shari’ah that then becomes a basis for deeper insights and knowledge to other areas of Islamic financial transactions. The MOOC is free and is available exclusively on www.openlearning.com.

For the Introduction to Islamic Finance 1 MOOC, INCEIF provides the course content material and collaborates with OpenLearning to design and develop the course before uploading it onto the OpenLearning platform.

Malaysia as a global hub for human capital in Islamic Finance
INCEIF was set up by Bank Negara Malaysia, the Central Bank of Malaysia, in 2006 and is the first Islamic finance private Higher Education Institution (HEI) in Malaysia to utilise the OpenLearning platform. As the world’s first and only international university dedicated to Islamic finance, INCEIF was established to develop professionals and specialists in the field to sustain market competitiveness and take on future challenges in the industry, with the goal of being the knowledge leader in Islamic finance. Introduction to Islamic Finance 1
The course focuses on the Islamic financial transactions which represent the core business activities of Islamic finance, and consists of four parts;
Part 1 - Shari’ah foundation in Islamic finance
Part 2 - Shari’ah framework in Islamic finance
Part 3 - Basic Shari'ah requirements in financial transactions
Part 4 - Application of Shari'ah contracts in Islamic finance

The Introduction to Islamic Finance 1 MOOC has built-in interactive features including online chatting, uploading, sharing, reviewing, commenting and feedback on learning content on every page.

This fosters a social learning environment, enabling a collaborative learning experience for students and lecturers to interact regardless of where they are in the world. Activities and course materials are designed to ensure students can connect effectively to learn and to reach a deep and conceptual understanding of Islamic finance.

As of 27 May 2016, over 150 finance professionals and students have registered in the MOOC, with Malaysia leading the way, followed by registrations from learners across Europe, Middle East, Asia Pacific and Southeast Asia. Registrations are now open and students will begin learning and interacting on 1 June 2016.
